New York City gives out 3 million free condoms per month

February 15, 2011

New York City, which has distributed three million free condoms per month for the last five years, has announced it is launching a smartphone application to help make access to free condoms even easier.

“We want New York City to be the safest city in the world to have sex,” said Monica Sweeney, New York City’s assistant health commissioner. “A lot of people come here for that, so we want them to practice safer sex.”

“We’re not promoting sex, we’re promoting safer sex,” she added. “In New York City and around the country, adolescents and pre-adolescents have sex whether you give them condoms or not.”

Sweeney is the author of Condom Sense: A Guide to Sexual Survival in the New Millennium. President George Bush appointed her to the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS in 2002.

The Archdiocese of New York and Diocese of Brooklyn have condemned the condom distribution campaign.

I wonder if Ms. Sweeney would like to comment on whether the 180 million condoms distributed have achieved the desired effect, such as fewer abortions, a reduction in STDs, and a reduction in HIV/AIDS (no need to ask about prostitution/sex slavery)? Something tells me that had the stats indicated such "success", Ms. Sweeney would have told us. Her silence probably tells us everything we need to know.

They're promoting illicit sex, and the myth that using condoms is the answer to disease and unwanted pregnancy. The only "safer sex" is within marriage between one man and one woman who understand the unitive and procreative acts must not be separated, but are halves of a whole ordained and given by God. Artificial contraception is disordered, as proven by the many wrongs that are produced by its use and failure: disease, abortion, partner and child abuse, human trafficking, divorce.
