Illinois deacon sentenced for embezzlement

A deacon of the Diocese of Joliet has been found guilty of embezzling $317,000 from his parish between 2006 and 2009. “Three months after he started as business manager, he started stealing from his own church,” the prosecuting attorney said of 58-year-old George Valdez, who has been sentenced to six years in prison.
