Lebanon's top prelate ready to resign?

January 17, 2011

Patriarch Nasrallah Pierre Sfeir—who as head of the Maronite Catholic Church exercises enormous public influence in Lebanon—has reportedly submitted his resignation to the Vatican.

The Lebanese prelate, who is also a member of the College of Cardinals, has been the Patriarch of Antioch and head of the Maronite Church since 1986. At the age of 91, he is reportedly awaiting word from the Vatican on whether his resignation will be accepted.

The leading Christian figure in a sharply divided nation, the Maronite Patriarch has been persistently critical of foreign influence in Lebanon, and frustrated by the latest collapse of the country’s government.
