St. Louis archbishop testifies in legal case of rebel parish

Archbishop Robert Carlson of St. Louis testified on January 10 in a court case that pits the archdiocese against the rebellious board of St. Stanislaus Kostka parish.
The archbishop told a Missouri court that he wants only to restore the governing structure that was put in place at St. Stanislaus when the parish was founded in 1891, allowing a lay board to govern along with the pastor, but preserving the ultimate authority of the archdiocese.
As the conflict escalated, in 2004 then-Archbishop Raymond Burke stripped the parish of its recognition and excommunicated the pastor, Father Marek Bozek. The St. Louis archdiocese filed suit against the board of St. Stanislaus in 2008, when the board changed its bylaws to separate itself from the control of the archdiocese. A bid for a mediated solution failed in 2010 when the parish board declined an archdiocesan offer.
