Cardinal Robert Sarah, the president of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum, is in Haiti this week, bringing a message of support and a financial contribution from Pope Benedict XVI as the impoverished nation marks the anniversary of a devastating earthquake on January 12.
Cardinal Sarah, who is visiting as the Pope's representative, has brought donations of $800,000 for the reconstruction of schools and another $400,000 to rebuild churches in Haiti, where thousands of buildings were demolished by the tremor. The cardinal will read a message from the Pontiff on January 12 as he presides at Mass on the anniversary of the tragedy.
The January 2010 earthquake in Haiti left 250,000 people dead and more than a million homeless. The country still faces the threat of epidemic diseases in the aftermath of the disaster.
