Christmas-tree lighting ceremony in St. Peter's Square
December 17, 2010
The Christmas tree in St. Peter’s Square was illuminated on Friday, December 17, in a short ceremony at which Cardinal Giovanni Lajolo, the president of the Vatican City governorate, presided.
Before the evening ceremony, Pope Benedict XVI met with a delegation from the South Tyrol region, from which the giant spruce tree was taken. The 93-year-old tree is just over 110 feet tall.
