Archbishop Myers charged with protecting abusive priests

December 06, 2010

A report in the Newark Star-Ledger charges that Archbishop John Myers has failed to take action against priests credibly accused of sexual abuse, despite the requirements of the "Dallas policy."

The Newark archdiocese insists that the archbishop has followed the requirements of the US bishops' norms for the disciplinary handling of abuse cases. The complaints, however, demonstrate that the policies cannot restore trust if the public does not trust the prelates enforcing them.

In the 12 single-spaced pagaes of the oiginal artical, is it just me, or has anyone else noticed there was a lot more smoke than fire - a lot of flashing back and forth with dates? If, he falls into the "bottom third" as characterized in the article, why pick him over all of the others in that so-called third? I suspect there are other things they dislike about him that affected the choice. I wonder how Bishop Kicanas would compare if he were as vigorously examined.
