Pro-lifer, head of liberal Democratic group clash on abortion funding in health-care legislation

October 21, 2010

A Washington pro-life activist challenged the head of a liberal Catholic organization in a heated exchange on public funding for abortion during a press conference on October 20.

The group known as Catholics United, which has defended President Obama and other Democratic candidates, had called the press conference to discuss campaign advertisements that have assailed lawmakers who “voted for taxpayer funded abortion” by supporting President Obama’s health-care plan. Catholics United has defended Congressman Steve Driehaus of Ohio, who complains that the ads are misleading.

When Chris Korzen of Catholics United said that the ad’s sponsors were “lying” about abortion funding in the health-care bill, that assertion was challenged by Douglas Johnson, the legislative director of the National Right to Life Committee. Johnson reminded Korzen that he and others had submitted a 23-page affadavit, detailing the points in the landmark legislation that involve support for abortion.

When pro-choicers yell "Liar!", it's likely a sign of desperation. But many of them who have had a change of heart have afterward admitted that pro-choice true believers felt they had a duty to do whatever it took to get their agenda or candidate passed--even to the point of lying. They have thus also assumed that pro-lifers resort to the same tactics, but we don't have to; we have truth on our side.
