Philippines: bishops will not compromise on family-planning bill

After a meeting with President Benigno Aquino, the Catholic bishops of the Philippines have reiterated that they will not waver in their opposition to an aggressive national family-planning initiative.

The bishops said that they hoped to continue discussions with the government, but would not compromise on the legislation. Informed sources said that the bishops came away from their meeting with Aquino convinced that the president had no intentions of negotiating on the issue, but met with them simply as a courtesy.

The Knights of Columbus in the Philippines have inaugurates a National Day of Prayer to oppose the legislation, saying that the effort could call public attention to the Church’s opposition.
