10 states file friend-of-the-court brief in defense of marriage
September 28, 2010
Ten states are supporting the appeal of an August 4 federal court decision that in essence imposed same-sex marriage on California. The court struck down legislation, approved by California voters in 2008, defining marriage as the union of a man and a woman.
The states that filed a friend-of-the-court brief are Alabama, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, South Carolina, Utah, Virginia, and Wyoming. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, which put the August 4 ruling on hold, is expected to hear arguments in the case in December.
