Massachusetts abortionist sentenced to 6 years for manslaughter

September 14, 2010

A Massachusetts court has handed down a 6-month prison sentence to an abortionist who pleaded guilty to a manslaughter charge.

Rapin Osathanondh was charged in the death of 22-year-old Laura Hope Smith, who died in 2007 from injuries inflicted during a botched abortion. Prosecutors said that the abortionist did not monitor the young woman properly, did not have adequate equipment to administer oxygen, did not have a working blood-pressure cuff in the clinic, and did not call for emergency help when his patient showed signs of cardiac distress.

Osathanondh reached a plea-bargain agreement with prosecutors just before the scheduled start of his trial. Under the terms of the agreement he is likely to spend only 3 months in prison, but will be stripped of his license to practice medicine.
