Vatican offers statistical profile of Church in Great Britain

In advance of the visit by Pope Benedict XVI to Great Britain later this month, the Vatican Information Service has released some statistics about the life of the Church there.

Among the 59.3 million people of Great Britain, 5.26 million—8.87%-- are Catholics. The Church is organized into 2,977 parishes, spread across 32 dioceses. There are 59 bishops, 5,225 priests, and 6,497 religious. The 2,828 Church-run schools in Great Britain serve 806,334 students. The Church also operates 8 hospitals and 1 clinic, 171 nursing homes, 79 orphanages, and 94 counseling centers.
