Abbey’s youngest monk becomes abbot, university chancellor

The youngest monk at a Chicago-area Benedict abbey has been elected abbot and, by virtue of that office, chancellor of Benedictine University.
A graduate of the University of Chicago with a degree in economics, Father Austin Murphy, 36, will officially become abbot of St. Procopius Abbey on September 18. Father Murphy, a patristics scholar, has written on the importance of fasting during Lent.
