Pope congratulates Cardinal Bertone on 50th anniversary of ordination

July 02, 2010

The Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano has published a personal letter from Pope Benedict XVI to Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, congratulating the Secretary of State on the 50th anniversary of his priestly ordination on July 1.

After years of pastoral work and an assignment to the Vatican, the Pope recalled that Cardinal Bertone became Archbishop of Genoa, where “you dedicated your zeal and your apostolic labors for the benefit of that ecclesial community.” More recently, as Secretary of State, “you are showing great commitment and great skill as you participate in our pastoral projects for the universal Church.”

The Pope concluded his message by invoking the intercession of the Virgin Mary and, in deference to Cardinal Bertone’s Salesian religious heritage, that of St. John Bosco.
