Boston archdiocese questions parish school's decision to bar child of lesbian couple

The Archdiocese of Boston has distanced itself from the decision by a parochial school to deny admission to the child of a lesbian couple. St. Paul's elementary school in Hingham, Massachusetts, had rescinded its acceptance of the 8-year-old boy, citing the couple's public rejection of Catholic moral teachings. But a spokesman for the Boston archdiocese said that there was no policy calling for such a stance. "We want kids to come to Catholic schools," said Terence Donilon. The archdiocese is now reportedly "in consultation" with the Hingham parish about the case.

If a public rejection of Catholic moral teaching on the part of parents is not compatible with enrolling a child in a Catholic School -- it should be -- and there's something seriously wrong with attempting to back pedal on it. If we need notorious and unrepentant sinners to send their children to Catholic schools to fill the seats, then, really, what's the point?

It does go to show that the "parents" don't know what the Church teaches about homosexuality. The poor kid might not ever know what the Church teaches about it given the way the religion textbooks tip-toe around the subject, as do many religious. I know of one priest, who counsels other priests, who stated that he had never heard of the Sins that Cry to Heaven for Vengeance!

I see the difficulty here. Shall we deny access to Catholic schools for all children of divorced and remarried parents or of contracepting couples, or of parents that will not commit to Sunday obligation? The answer may be yes, but since we don't, then why pick this particular rejection of church teaching by the "parents" (if they can be called that) as grounds to turn away this child?

Glad to see that, when the laity stands up for the Faith, the Cardinal is going to back them 100%. That's the way to keep us encouraged, Cardinal Séan! No wonder 95% of the students at my kids' parochial school don't go to Mass and couldn't recite the Creed from memory at this morning's Mass. (Oddly, the Spanish misalettes were of no help to them either; but I digress...)
