Coadjutor archbishop named for Hanoi

Pope Benedict XVI has named a coadjutor to the Archbishop of Hanoi. Bishop Pierre Nguyen Van Nhon, who now heads the Da Lat diocese, will be coadjutor to Archbishop Joseph Ngo Quang Kiet.

Archbishop Kiet recently returned to Hanoi after an extended visit to Rome for medical treatment. Along with his health problems, the archbishop has faced heavy pressure from the Vietnamese government, which called for his replacement last year, charging that he had fueled anti-government passions. His return to Hanoi early this month prompted rumors that he would soon be replaced.
