Sale looms for Boston's Catholic health-care system

A New York firm has reached a tentative agreement to buy Caritas Christi, the health-care system operated by the Boston archdiocese, the Boston Globe reports. The sale-- which could encounter opposition from public officials in Massachusetts-- would signal the end of a separate Catholic hospital system in the state, with the 7 hospitals of the Caritas system eventually coming under the control of a secular corporation.
Caritas Christi has been plagued by financial problems in recent years, and has made several previous efforts to arrange a sale. Last year the Catholic health-care system came under heavy fire for plans to administer a government-run health system that would have required coverage for abortion and contraception. Caritas Christi pulled out of that arrangement just before it was due to take effect, with Boston's Cardinal Sean O'Malley citing irreconcilable conflicts with Church moral teachings.
