Papal nuncio to US bishops: follow lead of Pope Francis

November 11, 2019

CWN Editor's Note: Archbishop Christoph Pierre, the apostolic nuncio to the United States, prodded the American bishops to show greater loyalty to Pope Francis, in a November 11 address to the US bishops’ conference. The nuncio encouraged the bishops to reflect on “to what extent we have received the magisterium of the Pope.” He claimed, for example, that “families continue to demand of dioceses and parishes the accompaniment envisioned by Amoris Laetitia.”

I personally would like for the American church to be 'far-sighted and proactive in efforts at evangelization, anticipating cultural, philosophical, and political trends'. But far more than that, I would love it if the American church fearless preached the gospel and let Jesus drive 'cultural, philosophical, and political trends'.

Amen Randal! Anytime someone tells you to get on board with the boss, it’s usually bad news and it’s the boss who isn’t getting it. And the guy who tells you, well we all know what kinda guy he is. Plus he’s telling the bishops what their flocks want? C’mon buddy, with the criminals notwithstanding, most bishops know what their flicks want and it ain’t Amoris Laëtitia. It’s clean up our schools, seminaries, universities and teach the faith for God’s sake. Literally.

I'd love to "receive the magisterium of the Pope.” The problem isn't my willingness to receive it, it's the pope's persistent unwillingness to "disambiguate" it!

In the cited article the nuncio said: "I am confident that the Church in the United States will discover the right path for its spiritual renewal." I hope and pray so because the path taken by the U.S. Church in the last 50 years has led to a weakening of Catholic education, politicians who claim Catholicism but are manifest dissenters from Catholic moral imperatives, an emptying of parishes, an undermining of Catholicism in Central and South America, irregularities in liturgical worship, etc.
