CWN Editor's Note: Bishop Joseph Huang Bingzhang—whose illicit ordination the Vatican has now recognized—has been installed as head of the Shantou diocese. The retiring Bishop Peter Zhuang Jianjian, declined to concelebrate Mass with his successor. Bishop Zhuang—an underground prelate who has never been recognized by the government—reportedly resisted pressure from the Vatican to resign early and make way for the government-backed prelate.
Shantou is a city of 5.4 million in Guangdong province (map).
