CWN Editor's Note: Archbishop Diarmuid Martin of Dublin has said that he takes seriously the complaints of former Irish president Mary McAleese, who has complained of “how ludicrous our Church has become” by failing to advance the power of women. The archbishop said that he would “accept the challenge with the humility of one who recognizes her alienation.” McAleese had said:

How long can the hierarchy sustain the credibility of a God who wants things this way, who wants a Church where women are invisible and voiceless in Church leadership, legal and doctrinal discernment and decision-making?

The first time I walked into a meeting of these DREs, I was greeted with the question: "May I help you?" I told the lady that I was looking for the meeting of DREs. She turned around and looked at the other women in the room. She then said: "Imagine that. A gentleman DRE!" Women who "made a difference"?
