CWN Editor's Note: Pope Francis acknowledges that he runs the danger of misinterpretation in his impromptu remarks, but says “I want to run this pastoral risk,” in the introduction to a new collection of his interviews. The Pontiff disclosed that even when questions are submitted in advance, he does not prepare his answers. “I know this can make me vulnerable, but it is a risk I want to take,” he says.

A responsible person who wants to take these risks, also makes sure that if he/she is misinterpreted, a correction is made right after the misinterpretation takes place. An irresponsible person, or a person who is pushing an agenda under the cover of confusion, on the other hand, does not make any corrections to the misinterpretation.

Risks are always run with a reward in mind—or at least they should be. I wonder: what reward could be worth such widespread confusion as his careless remarks have caused in the last four years?
