Come home, bishop urges undocumented Filipinos living in US

November 17, 2016

A Filipino bishop has suggested that any of his countrymen living illegally in the US should return home, before incoming President Donald Trump can take action against them.

“To protect themselves and not to put their future in danger, we advise them not to wait to be branded undocumented and be deported,” said Bishop Ruperto Santos of Balanga. The labor secretary of the Philippines, Silvestre Bello, has offered similar advice.

Bishops Santos said that the Catholic Church would join the government of the Philippines in offering help to those who returned to their native land. “This is the moment they need us,” he said.

An estimated 270,000 Filipinos are living in the US without legal documentation.
