Rome’s new mayor meets with Pope

Pope Francis received Virginia Raggi, Rome’s new mayor, in a 20-minute private audience on July 1.

Raggi, 37, was accompanied by members of her family. Elected on an anti-corruption platform, she assumed office on June 22 and is the city’s first woman mayor.

The Holy See Press Office noted the meeting in its daily briefing but did not divulge the topics odiscussed. Raggi said afterwards that she was moved by the meeting and described the Pope as “a person of profound humanity.”
