Replacement named for German bishop who resigned following spending complaints
July 01, 2016
Pope Francis has named a new bishop of Limburg, Gemany, to succeed Bishop Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst, the German prelate who resigned in 2014 under heavy criticism for his use of diocesan funds.
The new bishop is Msgr. Georg Bätzing, vicar general of the Diocese of Trier. For the past two years, the Diocese of Limburg has been governed by an apostolic administrator, Bishop Manfred Grothe.
Bishop Tebartz-van Elst, 56, now works for the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization.
