Avoid entanglement in political elections, Manila cardinal tells priests

December 29, 2015

Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle of Manila has urged his priests not to offer Mass at political campaign events.

National, provincial, and local legislative and executive elections, including the presidential election, are scheduled for May 9.

“We encourage you to be more discerning in seeking assistance or favors from politicians so as not to endanger the integrity of the Church’s teaching and moral stance,” Cardinal Tagle said in a message made public on December 22.

“It is best to avoid appearing in public political sorties and campaigns, while not discouraging politicians and candidates from seeking genuine spiritual counsel,” he continued. “This instance should be done in utmost privacy.”

The prelate also said that “lay liturgical ministers who are running for public office must take a leave from the exercise of their ministry upon filing for candidacy.”
