2nd Sicilian bishop is focus of embezzlement probe

December 18, 2015

A second Sicilian Catholic bishop is under investigation for allegedly embezzling Church funds, according to a report in the Italian daily Corriere della Sera.

Earlier this week the Vatican denied a report that Bishop Francesco Micciché of Trapani had sought Vatican citizenship in a bid to avoid prosecution. Bishop Micciché, who is being investigated for the misuse of diocesan funds, was removed from office in 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI.

Now Corriere della Sera reports that Bishop Domenico Mogavero of the nearby Mazara Del Vallo diocese is also the focus of prosecutors’ questions. Police are reportedly asking how €180,000 ($195,000) in diocesan funds were moved into his personal account.
