Brazilian bishop resigns following drunk-driving incident
December 16, 2015
Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Bishop Paulo Sérgio Machado of São Carlos, a city of 220,000 in southeastern Brazil.
In September, the bishop was stopped by police after he exhibited signs of intoxication while driving and almost hit a pedestrian and another vehicle. An empty wine bottle was found in the car.
Days later, the diocese issued a statement denying reports that he had offered his resignation.

"Days later, the diocese issued a statement denying reports that he had offered his resignation" - why do the bureaucrats always seem to do this? It solves nothing but undermines their credibility.
