Venezuelan cardinal decries suppression of government critics

December 14, 2015

Cardinal Jorge Urosa Savino of Caracas has called for an amnesty law in Venezuela, saying that “there are many people who are detained without serious allegations.”

The cardinal expressed his sympathy for young people who have been jailed for voicing their opposition to government policies; “these people must be released,” he said. He argued that the government should be sensitive to the needs of people who have demonstrated against economic regulations, protesting laws that have caused extreme shortages and crippled the nation’s economy. He said that President Nicolas Maduro has an obligation to “promote peace and not to express violent speeches”—a reference to the demagogic tactics that have characterized the presidency since the rise of the late Hugo Chavez.
