Vatican announces creation of pontifical healthcare commission
December 14, 2015
Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, has announced the creation of the Pontifical Commission for the Activities of Public Juridical Persons of the Church in the Healthcare Sector.
The commission, announced on December 12, follows a December 7 meeting at which Pope Francis gave Cardinal Parolin the mandate to create the commission, which will promote more effective asset management of Catholic healthcare institutions while “maintaining and promoting” their founders’ charisms.
The commission will have a chairman and six other members. By a rescript of Pope Francis, it has the authority to “to carry out general studies to ascertain the sustainability of the healthcare systems of the juridical persons of the Church, and to prepare long-range operational sustainability strategies in keeping with the social doctrine of the Church,” Vatican Radio reported.
