Vatican admits financial 'irregularity' at CDF, clears Cardinal Müller

December 10, 2015

The Vatican has acknowledged that financial irregularities were uncovered in the offices of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, but rejected rumors that Cardinal Gerhard Müller, the prefect of the Congregation, is under investigation.

The German newspaper Bild had reported that an envelope containing €20,000 (about $22,000) in cash was discovered in the CDF offices. But the Vatican spokesman, Father Federico Lombardi, said that the discovery was made, and “necessary action” taken, several months ago.

“The superiors of the discastery, especially Cardinal Müller, have absolutely nothing to do with the affair,” Father Lombardi said.

The Vatican did not identify the official in whose office the cash was discovered, or comment on any possible disciplinary action. Until the adoption of new financial regulation and centralized budgeting requirements, it was not uncommon for Vatican officials to make cash payments for translation, consulting, and other services.
