Beatification of 3 priests slain by Maoists in Peru

December 07, 2015

Three missionary priests who were slain in 1991 by Maoist Shining Path rebels in Peru were beatified in Chimbote, the site of their martyrdom, on December 5.

Cardinal Angelo Amato, the prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, presided at the outdoor Mass of beatification.

Two of the three priests—Blessed Michal Tomaszek (1960-91) and Blessed Zbigniew Adam Strzalkowski (1958-91)—were Conventual Franciscan friars from Poland. The third, Blessed Alessandro Dordi (1931-91), was an Italian diocesan priest.

“May these martyrs’ fidelity in following Jesus give all of us, especially Christians persecuted in different parts of the world, the strength to give testimony to the Gospel with courage,” Pope Francis said following his December 6 Angelus address.
