Senate votes to defund Planned Parenthood; presidential veto certain

December 04, 2015

The US Senate has voted to defund Planned Parenthood and to repeal key provisions of the “Obamacare” health reform.

Although President Obama will undoubtedly veto the legislation, the December 3 vote ensures that both Obamacare and federal funding for Planned Parenthood will be contentious topics in the 2016 election year.

The vote came on a budget-reconciliation bill, with Republicans favoring the measure and Democrats opposed. The final vote was 52 to 47—far short of the two-thirds majority that would be required to override a presidential veto.
