'Vatileaks' defendant's home raided by Italian police in separate investigation

December 03, 2015

Police in Rome raided the home of "Vatileaks II" defendant Francesca Chaouqui and her husband Corrado Lanino, searching for evidence of the couple's suspected involvement in an unrelated criminal investigation.

The December 1 raid was connected to the investigation of a real-estate transfer involving Paolo Berlusconi, the brother of former Italian premier Silvio Berlusconi. Paolo Berlusconi is suspected of embezzlement in connection with the sale of San Girolamo castle; Francesca Chaouqui is alleged to have offered to assist Berlusconi in using Vatican accounts for financial transfers. Both Chaouqui and Berlusconi have denied the allegations.</p>
