Traditionalist leader rejects English bishops' call for change in Good Friday prayer for Jews

December 03, 2015

The leader of an international Catholic traditionalist group has rejected a call by the bishops of England and Wales for changes in the Good Friday prayer for the Jews.

Felipe Alanis Suarez, the president of Una Voce International, pointed out that the prayer used in the Extraordinary Form liturgy was revised by Pope Benedict XVI in 2008, and the current wording “clearly based on what is essential to Christianity: the acceptance of Christ as Savior of the whole world, and the desire that all persons be saved.”

Suarez continued:

The prayer looks forward to the incorporation of the Jewish people, of which Our Lord Jesus Christ and his first disciples were all members, in the salvation won for the human race by Christ on the Cross, a reconciliation which, as St. Paul teaches, will be fulfilled only towards the end of history.

The Catholic bishops of England and Wales issued a public statement in November urging the Vatican to change the prayer, in which the faithful ask God to illumine the hearts of the Jewish people “that they acknowledge Jesus Christ as the Savior of all men.” The said that the prayer—which is used only in the traditional Good Friday liturgy—has “caused great confusion and upset.”

Why should I be offended if someone, out of love, would like me to join their religion? If my Muslim friend isn't praying for me to become a Muslim, then he's not a very good friend.

What are we evangelizing about if not to bring all peoples to Christ? This is ridiculous and further example of our obsession with being politically correct and not "hurting feelings." Jesus's "mandate" before He ascended into Heaven was to (paraphrased) "Go out into all the world baptizing in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them all that I have taught You and I will be with you until the end of the age." We have our marching orders from Jesus!

The Catholic bishops of England and Wales say that the prayer has “caused great confusion and upset.” They must think the New Testament as a whole is politically incorrect toward Jews, especially the part that says: “Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you."
