Samoan leader meets with Pope

Pope Francis received Samoa’s prime minister, Tuilaepa Aiono Sailele Malielegaoi, in audience on December 3.
Following the audience, Malielegaoi met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, and Msgr. Antoine Camilleri, the Under-Secretary for Relations with States.
According to the Holy See Press Office, the parties discussed the contribution of the Church to the life of the nation, especially in education, as well as national, regional, and international issues, particularly climate change and the environmental problems faced by nations in the Pacific.
Malielegaoi, a Catholic, has served as Samoa’s prime minister since 1998. The Polynesian nation of 194,000, once known as Western Samoa, is approximately 60% Protestant, 23% Catholic, and 15% Mormon.
