Religion can help build ‘modern globalized world,’ says Vatican cardinal

November 24, 2015

Speaking at a conference in Pozzallo, Sicily, the president of the Pontifical Council for Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People said on November 22 that “today there is an unfortunate tendency to consider religion as a negative factor that fosters conflict.”

“Religion plays an important role in promoting acceptance of reality in continual evolution and with the commitment to developing respect for persons of different origins,” said Cardinal Antonio Maria Vegliò. “Religion can help the State to contribute to the responsible planning and peaceful management of the modern globalized world.”

Migration, he added, is an “occasion for promoting a real catholicity,” characterized by opening, welcome, and respect for diverse cultures, “leading to an experience of true brotherhood.”
