Vatican Museums produce thorough tour on DVDs

November 19, 2015

The Vatican Museums have released a set of DVDs that provide a tour of the entire Vatican collection.

The 6-disc set, narrated in Italian and entitled Musei del Papa, was produced by the Vatican Television Center in cooperation with the RAI network, L’Espresso, and financial sponsors. The tour includes the broad range of the Vatican’s collections, from classical antiquities and the Etruscan collection through modern masters.

Antonio Paolucci, the director of the Vatican Museums, observes that the DVD set allows a viewer to see works that might escape notice for a visitor to the physical collection. The Vatican Museums include over three miles of corridors, parlors, and galleries, he explains. “The collections are next to each other and sometimes one inside of another.” The guided tour eliminates the danger of accidentally passing by an important collection.

For curators of the Vatican Museums, the DVD set provides another benefit. Roughly 6 million tourists visit the Vatican Museums each year, straining the practical limits of the facility. The electronic tour will enable many more to profit from the Vatican collection without adding to the congestion.
