Congo’s bishops warn against unconstitutional 3rd term for president

Amid continued concerns that Joseph Kabila will seek an unconstitutional third term as president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the nation’s bishops called for respect for the constitution.

Kabila has called for a “national dialogue” on the 2016 election.
“We need to emphasize that dialogue must take place in full respect of the constitutional and institutional framework in force,” the bishops responded, according to Catholic Information Service for Africa. “To do otherwise would result in danger, with incalculable consequences for the nation.”
53% of the nation’s 81.7 million people are Catholic.
