No decision yet on canonization of Mother Teresa, Vatican says, countering rumor

November 18, 2015

An Italian media report that Mother Teresa of Calcutta will be canonized next September is premature, the Vatican press office has cautioned.

The AGI news service had reported that Blessed Mother Teresa could be canonized on September 5, on the anniversary of her death, or on the preceding Sunday, September 4. A similar report had appeared in the Italian media last month.

But Father Ciro Benedettini, the deputy director of the Vatican press office, told the Catholic News Agency that the Congregation for the Causes of Saints has not completed its work on the cause for Mother Teresa’s canonization. The Vatican is still studying a reported miracle that has been attributed to her intercession:  the sudden healing of a Brazilian man from a malignant brain tumor. Until that miracle is formally approved, no date for canonization can be set.
