We live in a time of ‘painful purification,’ says CDF prefect

November 12, 2015

Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller, the prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, traveled to a retreat house in Punta de Tralca, Chile, to celebrate the opening Mass of a meeting of the Episcopal Conference of Chile.

Jesus “directed his teachings to his disciples, specifically to twelve regular men of his day, and he told them to evangelize the whole world,” Cardinal Müller preached on November 10. “Whatever his reasons may have been, the Lord did not follow the world’s ‘marketing’ plan with all its loud and annoying methods. He did not write a book, rather he founded a community, the Church, which is his body.”

“Today, a painful purification is in course, but it is the same as when Jesus overturned the tables,” he continued. “Purification is painful and disquieting. May it do its work. Let us remain faithful and not become discouraged. Some left, but we must remain faithful in dialogue with Jesus in his Church.”

“The work of the Church is not to reflect the opinions of her members,” he concluded. “The Church’s job is to reflect the point of view of her head and founder: Jesus Christ.”

Cardinal Mueller is so right. Regardless of what is happening or appears to be happening in our beloved Church and among some of Her members, we must remain strong and faithful and look to our Lord and Savior and the Head of His Church, Jesus Christ.

The Episcopal conference going on in Chile must be acutely aware that one in their midst has outraged many. So far without action from Rome. Will this 'painful purification' Or will it continue to shelter a wrongdoer to the continued anger of the knowledgeable laity?
