Bishop's role is service, Pope says in ordaining new Rome auxiliary

November 09, 2015

”The title of ‘Bishop’ is not one of honor but of function,” Pope Francis observed in his homily as he ordained a new auxiliary bishop for the Rome Diocese on November 9.

Celebrating the feast of the Dedication of St. John Lateran, the Pope traveled across Rome to the basilica, where he celebrated Mass and ordained Bishop Angelo De Donatis.

The Pope went on to say that the duties of the bishops include the obligations to “proclaim the message whether it is welcome or unwelcome; correct error with unfailing patience; and teach the people committed to your care to pray and offer sacrifice, so as to draw every kind of grace for them from the overflowing holiness of Christ.”
