Leading French bishop speaks on synod, refugees, climate change

November 06, 2015

In an address to his brother bishops, the president of the Bishops’ Conference of France highlighted the importance of the recent synod on the family, the European refugee crisis, and the upcoming UN conference on climate change.

The synod, Archbishop Georges Pontier of Marseille said at a meeting in Lourdes, was a “profound moment of ecclesial life, an experience of the beauty of the Church,” and its final report has been entrusted to Pope Francis for implementation as he determines.

Speaking about the European refugee crisis, Archbishop Ponter said that Christ’s conclusion to the parable of the Good Samaritan-- “go and do likewise”-- appeals to each person’s conscience and that Christians in particular must ask themselves what will happen to the refugees if they are not welcomed.

The prelate concluded by calling on Catholics to trust in God’s grace and infinite mercy and to be “artisans of peace, dialogue, agents of justice and generalized fraternity.”
