A bishop's life is service, Pope says at Mass for deceased prelates

November 03, 2015

As he celebrated Mass on November 3 for the bishops who have died in the past year, Pope Francis said that a bishop must serve the faithful, and “he who does not live to serve, has no reason to live.”

“Those who serve and give may be seen to ‘lose’ in the eyes of the world, but in reality, losing life, they rediscover it,” the Pope said in his homily. He described this as the “style of God,” made manifest in Jesus Christ: “He does not change things with words, but with actions; not in appearance, but in substance; not on the surface, but at the root. He transforms the Cross into a bridge to life.”
