Cardinal Tagle: see the human element behind the politics of migration

October 19, 2015

“Where is humanity?” Cardinal Luis Tagle of Manila asked, after visiting a transit camp for refugees.

Cardinal Tagle, the newly elected president of Caritas International, spoke with Vatican Radio after visiting the transit camp in Greece. He said that it is important to set aside the political aspects of the migration crisis and look at the individuals and families.

“Why are human beings making it difficult for other human beings just to move out of an unpleasant situation, to look for a better future?” he asked.

The cardinal observed that most migrants realize that they are taking serious risks by leaving their homes, but they are willing to face dangers in order to give their children a better life, and to escape even worse situations in their homelands. He reported that when asked why they have left their native countries, the refugees answer: “It is always for our families, always for our children.”

The crisis will become more acute as winter sets in, Cardinal Tagle observed. He said that he hopes the world will wake up to “see the ill consequences of failed politics, of failed approaches to peace, the use of arms and the lack of respect for people who differ from us in terms of culture and religions.”

"Just to move out of an unpleasant situation,to look for a better future." This remark assumes a boundary-less world and ignores the realities on the ground for the countries to which people move looking for a better future.
