Cardinal Pell still concerned about committee drafting Synod's final statement

October 13, 2015

Cardinal George Pell has said that a letter written to Pope Francis by a group of cardinals was confidential and should have remained private.

In an October 12 statement decrying the publication of a report about the cardinals' letter, the Australian prelate said that the report, by veteran Vatican journalist Sandro Magister, contained "errors in both the content and the list of signatories."

However, Cardinal Pell acknowledged that "many Synod fathers" remain concerned about the composition of a 10-man committee appointed by Pope Francis to draft the Synod's final text. There are also concerns about the process by which the Synod will vote on a final statement, he said.

The cardinal said that the concerns arise from the fact that "minority elements" within the Synod are seeking to change Church teaching regarding the reception of Communion by divorced and remarried Catholics. "Obviously there is no possibility of change on this doctrine," the cardinal's statement says.
