Colombia's high court upholds judgment holding diocese liable in sex-abuse case

October 09, 2015

The Supreme Court in Colombia has confirmed a ruling that the Diocese of Libano-Honda must pay $220,000 in damages to the families of two boys who were molested by a Catholic priest.

The ruling marks the first time that a diocese in Colombia has been held legally responsible for the misconduct of a cleric. After Father Luis Enrique Duque had been convicted of sexual abuse, and a local court found the diocese responsible, Church officials appealed the ruling, saying that the abuse was a violation of the priest’s duties.
