Vatican official, at UN, underlines importance of test-ban treaty

September 30, 2015

Speaking on September 29 at a UN session on the comprehensive nuclear test-ban treaty, the Vatican’s top foreign-policy official renewed the Vatican’s appeal for all nations to ratify the treaty.

Archbishop Paul Gallagher, the Secretary for Relations with States, said that acceptance of the test-ban treaty is an effective step toward the greater goal of nuclear disarmament. He said: “It is our duty towards humanity as a whole, and especially to the poor and to future generations, to use the unprecedented power which science and technology provide for the service of the common good, and for promoting a genuine culture of peace.”
