Priest slain in Philippines

September 30, 2015

A Catholic priest was stabbed to death on September 29 in Tanjay, in the Philippines, the Fides news service reports.

Father Antonio Magalso was attacked and killed while he was on his way to celebrate Mass in his parish of the Holy Cross. Police said that there was no obvious motive for the murder; one witness said that the priest’s assailant appeared to have serious mental or emotional problems.

Bishop Julito Cortes of Dumaguete visited the parish, urging parishioners to grieve for their pastor “in an atmosphere of penance and mercy.” He announced that parishes throughout the diocese would conduct holy hours, praying for the slain priest and his killer.
