Chiapas bishop laments violence

Indigenous activists in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas clashed with police on September 25, the Fides news agency reported.

One policeman was killed and seven were injured in the incident.
“People have the right to fight for what they consider right, to demonstrate and demand, but never with violence, with sticks or stones, and even less with firearms,” said Bishop Felipe Arizmendi Esquivel of San Cristóbal de las Casas.
“What is not acceptable in any way is violence, any kind of violence,” he added. “There is not only repressive violence, there is also offensive violence, and obviously violence causes more violence.”
