Philadelphia mayor hopes to press Pope for change in Church policy on homosexuality

September 24, 2015

Philadelphia’s Mayor Michael Nutter has said that he will press for a change in Church teaching on homosexuality when he meets with Pope Francis during the Pope’s visit this weekend.

Nutter—who is an honorary member of the steering committee for the World Meeting of Families—released a statement saying that he hoped for a chance to speak with the Pope about the “systematic and institutionalized discrimination” against homosexuals in the Church. In a draft of a message to the Pontiff, the mayor wrote:

For the many LGBT individuals who seek the Lord and have good will, we ask that you end judgment of these individuals by those within the church through teaching and pastoral practice currently in place.

I can't wait to hear how the Pope responds. It will tell me a lot.

Who is an LGBT person? Not all experiencing homosexual or other sexual feelings necessarily identify with the political ideology pushed in their name. There are simply human persons. Distinctions based on the natural order of sexuality written in human nature are not unjust nor institutions based on those distinctions are unjust. Seeking the Lord and doing his will involve living according to His word and commandments.
